Medically Necessary Reasons for Gonadectomies in Cats
Cryptorchidism
Urinary Blockages
Urinary blockages, especially repeated and/or severe ones, require a perineal urethrostomy, a surgery which creates a larger opening in the back that the surgeon has to create. If there are still testicles, the surgery will have to remove the testicles. It also not only remove the testicles, but the entire scrotum and entire penis as well.
The surgery is most commonly done on male cats, especially on castrated ones due to the fact that castrations, predispose male cats to have narrow urethras. Castrations done on male cats before they are 9 months old don't allow for the male cat's urethra to grow to a normal width and diameter.
The procedure is also done on cattle, sheep, and goats, especially on young males castrated at a young age.
